The Austin site is passionate about the daily support of R&D activities for the Sample Preparation Business Unit. We develop sample prep solutions to extract nucleic acid from samples that are crucial in scientific discovery and translational research applications used by scientists to drive innovation around the globe. Our teams are solving sophisticated engineering problems to enable our customers to find cures for cancer, vaccines for deadly diseases, and effective drugs to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.
How you will make an impact?
You will play a critical role leading and developing a multidisciplinary team of skilled engineers responsible for implementing new automation systems as well as supporting and improving current products through the product development lifecycle. You will be involved with next generation product development, technology evaluation and selection, specifications development, product verification, validation, transfer to manufacturing, and sustaining engineering. You must be effective at leading an engineering team and working in a matrix organization using Agile techniques to achieve program goals. Major Duties & Responsibilities
What you will do?
- Lead, mentor, engage, and empower staff within the R&D systems engineering team.
- Help prioritize and deliver project goals and objectives within a matrix reporting structure with a focus on driving key product development goals.
- Develop, maintain, and present regular project status reports, issues, and solutions to leadership.
- Identify and remove roadblocks that impede team progress.
- Coordinate and facilitate regular project planning meetings, daily/weekly stand-ups, design reviews, and other project commitments.
- Lead the team from concept to product launch while meeting phase gate deliverables on time, within budget, and within scope.
- Collaborate with Reagent R&D team and product management to identify areas of opportunity to automate chemistries and processes within Sample Prep.
- Lead and/or assist in developing product requirements for automation opportunities.
- Provide rationale/justification for automation development projects to acquire funding.
- Act as automation SME and leader on core teams.
- Spearhead work breakdown structure with program management. Lend expertise in the form of process flow.
- Supply expertise to the development of V&V and qualification plans and protocols where possible.
- Mentor junior engineers. Assist team with meeting project goals.
- Communicate to Operations and R&D teams to help drive and implement continuous improvements.
- Provide early input into the project plan regarding risks and schedule based on the scope and complexity of project requirements.
- Liaise with the customer to identify needs within their area of focus.
Minimum Education & Experience

Education
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Bioengineering, Analytical Chemistry, or related technical field; Master’s Degree preferred
Experience
- Consistent track record with 4+ years of engineering leadership experience in scientific instrumentation development, medical devices, biotech or related area
- Experience in leading/managing multiple projects; project leadership, product commercialization, scope & resource definition, possibility/solution work stream generation, knowledge management, and its transition to applications
- Experience guiding engineers through technical challenges
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Possess a thorough knowledge of technical fields
- Highly effective communication, organization, coordination, and presentation skills
- Ability to coordinate and manage numerous activities with a multi-disciplinary team to achieve success
- Strong problem-solving attitude and analytical skills
- Ability to develop high levels of credibility and positive professional relationships with staff, peers, and leadership.
