Description
3M, as a world-wide and world-class manufacturing company that thrives on innovation, is adding a Director of Automation position within it’s global Engineering and Manufacturing Technology organization. In this role, you would be responsible to understand the breadth of 3M manufacturing and define a strategic plan to aggressively drive automation further into 3M’s manufacturing operations. This includes recruiting and leading an automation team to implement standardized automation platforms to increase 3M manufacturing efficiency along with developing new-to-the-world technology enabling innovative 3M products.
The ideal candidate would have significant automation experience, including technology leadership and project/personnel management. They would also have an extensive network within the automation community to understand current capabilities and future technical directions along with vendor relationships for capital project execution. A strong EQ and IQ balance is required to imagine, build, and sustain a healthy automation group for years to come. This is an exciting opportunity to lead future automation growth within 3M’s operations.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop multi-year strategic plan to define and achieve full automation ambition across global 3M.
- Define, recruit, and lead a team of 10-20 salaried professionals to develop innovative automation solutions, replicate developed platforms across the company, and provide technical support to all 3M manufacturing locations.
- Develop innovative automation technology roadmaps to intersect with manufacturing efficiency improvement and new product development requirements.
- Engage key stakeholders throughout 3M’s matrixed organization to achieve sustainable success.
- Build an automation talent pipeline enabling long-term continuous improvement to 3M’s manufacturing and product developments. This includes both a corporate group and local automation engineers at global manufacturing locations.
- Foster and environment that supports learning, innovation and risk-taking.
- Monitor current and future automation trends (industrial and academic). Adopt and improve relevant technologies to intersect with 3M current and future business needs. Drive intellectual property development.
- Promote data utilization and advanced analytics for process optimizations.
- Oversee management of key automation capital projects.
- Work closely with adjacent manufacturing technology areas such as material science product manufacturing, process controls, automated inspection/sensing, etc. to increase their contributions through automation.
Minimum Skills & Abilities
- 15+ years' industrial automation and/or robotics experience
- 10+ years' experience leading automation projects and teams in complex capital automation projects
- Deep knowledge and insight into best-in-class automation operations
- Significant experience and demonstrable network within global automation solutions providers (vendors)
- Demonstrated business acumen including capital planning and project management
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, organization, influencing and negotiating skills
Minimum Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree (Mechanical, Electrical, or similar) from an accredited university
- Automation experience in Automotive, Consumer Electronics, or Semiconductor industry preferred
- Automation experience in consumer or industrial manufacturing industries a plus
- PMP or similar project management certification
