The Product Development Engineer I must have technical knowledge of foil lamination and banknote printing techniques so as to drive process improvement and innovation through print capabilities to enhance Crane Currency’s competitive differentiation. The individual will help global R&D colleagues validate new products on commercial equipment and establish process conditions to ensure high and consistent product yield. The individual must work effectively with both scientists/engineers and the project manager in ensuring that product design requirements are not compromised and deadlines are met. The individual must ensure thorough documentation of data and use the same to guide scientists and project manager on the next steps of the project. The individual must be able to travel to third party sites for training and technology transfer.


  • Management; set long and short term goals according to the strategic business plan and annual goals for contract managers.
  • Implement strategies for team that enables Crane Currency to maximize performance and results.
  • Lead and develop the team to be an organization that is characterized by high knowledge, motivation and commercial thinking working in a well-defined process.
  • Finding solutions in collaboration with other departments to improve both client satisfaction and contract profitability as well as facilitating shipping, invoicing and cash collection.
  • Responsible in facilitating the process to customer complaints and respond to the customer in a timely manner in cooperation with Crane Operations and Quality.
  • It is the employee’s responsibility to comply with the Company’s safety policies, ensuring that all personal protective equipment is in place and that good judgment and care are exercised to prevent accidents and personal injury.

Develop expertise in troubleshooting foil and surface application machines

  • Work with product development team in developing robust process to ensure high yield scale up on multiple substrates
  • Work with equipment suppliers to develop expertise in equipment operation and troubleshooting
  • Help with key testing of products during scale up as required by project team
  • Partner with suppliers in ensuring raw materials and alternative threads can be run through the process at high yields
  • Establish and lead the investigation of root cause analysis of high priority problem issues; implement processes to reduce the risk of similar issues in the future
  • Write and maintain SOPs for all processes to be performed on the machine

Generate Innovation Funnel for Malta Print and execute on small projects

  • Develop intimate knowledge of capabilities and issues associated with each printing press within the banknote printing process to identify unused/under-utilized capabilities for potential innovation
  • Document process improvement and banknote product innovation ideas to create a robust innovation funnel
  • Propose and champion innovation concepts for adoption by senior leadership
  • Execute on innovation projects to enhance the competitive differentiation of Crane Currency

20%  Coordination with NPD Scientists, local Process Engineers and Project Manager

  • Ensure that trial preparations are done in advance of visit by scientists
  • Update Project Manager on needs on a regular basis during scale up trials.
  • Ensure that trials are executed as per Project Manager’s plan.
  • Participate in calls to update other sites on the progress of the trials

 20%  Travel to third party partner sites and other Crane sites

  • Develop deep understanding of third party equipment and the differences between Crane equipment to facilitate productive discussions and collaboration with third parties
  • Provide training on new Crane products to ensure that partners feel comfortable with the product


Knowledge (Education/Training) or equivalent :


  • Bachelor’s in Engineering or related discipline


Experience in printing and laminating operations


Technical and other Experience, Skills and Characteristics (e.g. statistical analysis, project management, initiative):


  • 2 years experience in operations after university


2 years experience in operating hot foil stamping equipment or banknote printing industry after university


Interpersonal / Leadership Skills / Experience (e.g. cross-functional collaborative ability, leadership experience):


  • Strong project management skills demonstrating the ability to push projects over the finish line with sound planning and persistent execution
  • Innovative mindset to identify potential opportunities to utilize existing equipment to enhance product or process capabilities
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Clear process orientation with a demonstrated ability to develop repeatable processes or improve existing processes in and out of product development
  • Clear writing skills for the documentation and maintenance of SOPs for press operation
  • Excellent communication skills as it relates to disseminating and gathering information to NPD scientist

Strong inclination to work with 3rd parties to ensure products scale up well in their operations
