The Senior Safety Engineer will be responsible for leading highly-skilled, cross-functional teams through safety hazard analysis and risk assessments, conceptualization of safety systems and risk reduction strategies, safety system specification and implementation, and validation/verification activities in support of internal R&D testing and commercial deployments of Sarcos Robotics products in North American and international markets. This position will help lead the industry in adaptation of industrial and machinery safety to highly dexterous and unstructured robotics and exoskeleton applications. As a key member of the Engineering team, the Senior Safety Engineer will promote a culture of safety and help establish and implement safety engineering processes and requirements at the company throughout the product lifecycle.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
· Promote and adapt industry best practices from US and International safety standards to Sarcos processes and products (e.g. ISO 12100, ANSI B11, ISO 13849-1/-2, IEC 61508), and maintain knowledge and engagement of our safety team with current and future robotics, machine safety, and functional safety Type B and C standards.
· Work with internal and external robotics expertise to develop and apply industry-leading methods of hazard identification, risk estimation, and risk reduction for unstructured and exoskeleton robotics systems.
· Lead and perform safety engineering efforts through all product lifecycle phases for existing and new product designs, including support of product safety standards conformity and certification.
· Collaborate with engineering teams to ideate, implement, and test proven and innovative risk reduction measures for challenging safety hazards and risks.
· Conduct experiments of product safety prototypes including experiment set-up, execution, detailed data recording, and data summarization.
· Balance the development of novel technical solutions with industry safety standards/processes, business risk, and schedule constraints, and partner with product and company leadership to make informed short and long-term decisions for our safety strategy and methods.
Minimum Skills & Abilities
· Skilled in working with cross-functional teams of product management, program management, all engineering disciplines, and test teams.
· Demonstrated engineering creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to prioritize and multitask.
· Strong team player and comfortable leading groups of engineers, designers, and technicians.
· Demonstrated ability to estimate, plan, and manage work assignments to completion.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum Education & Experience
· BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics, or similar Engineering with 6-8+ years of product safety or comparable experience. Salary and title dependent on experience.
· Safety Engineer certification required (CFSE, CFSP, or CMSE), CFSE preferred
· Experience with a range of domestic and international safety standards; voting membership on Functional Safety, Machinery Safety, or Robotics Safety Standard committee(s) preferred
· Experience working with Intertek, TUV, CSA, or other Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories for U.S. or international safety certifications
· Ability to travel when necessary (up to 10%).
· Authorization to work in the USA.
