Motion control sensors are a major driving force in the increasing adoption of intelligent motion control systems. These sensors process application data and equip motion control systems to adapt based on the data being analyzed.
Diagnostic, speed and displacement data are some of the most frequently processed data in motion control. A motion control sensor for diagnostics, for example, can monitor wear and tear, signaling when preventative maintenance is required to avoid system downtime.
Types of Intelligent Motion Control
There are a few different types of motion control components that are widely deployed and play a major role in the increasing intelligence of motion control systems:
- Rotary torque sensor: a device that measures torque for process control and monitoring, playing an important part in overall accuracy. These sensors are often used in industrial automation and long-run testing environments.
- Inclination sensor: an inclination sensor is used to detect 2-axis positioning and zero-point leveling for mobile applications. They’re often used in the monitoring of wind tower structures.
- Incremental rotary encoder: these devices are used in precision motion control applications, often when displacement must be detected. Incremental rotary encoders help with maintenance and tracking work output.
- Inductive and Capacitive Proximity Sensors: proximity sensors are used to detect the presence or position of an object in an industrial setting. They’re deployed in assembly, conveying and robotic applications.
Benefits of Intelligent Motion Control
There are a wide range of benefits that come with intelligent motion control systems. First and foremost, they are more flexible than mechanical systems. This means more processes can be completed with lower automation investment, but also that changeover-related downtime is minimized or even eliminated.
The processing of diagnostic data further increases uptime in intelligent motion control systems because unexpected system failures are avoided. Overall productivity sees a boost, too, as motion control sensors typically facilitate higher production speeds.
Intelligent motion control systems provide significant advantages over traditional mechanical systems. Like any type of automation, motion control sensors are creating new levels of uptime, flexibility and productivity.
